What is Wrong with Lizard Breath?

March 11th, 2008 (01:53 pm)

Why does she need to be told this? Who the hell is Anthony to have to explain this crap to her? What happened to her brain?

The Comics Curmudgeon nailed this one in a comment on yesterday's strip:

There’s an entire Women’s Studies thesis waiting to be written about the Foobs today. Elizabeth’s abject terror and panic that Anthony will think she’s a two-timing ne’er-do-well would be hilarious if it weren’t so pathetic and queasy-making. The fact that Anthony isn’t being a total douche for once (“Gosh, sorry you’re terrified about being caught alone with a man after sundown … I didn’t realize that this phone could call the 19th century”) just makes it ickier. Presumably Liz will agree to Anthony’s inevitable proposal to “make it up for him,” setting a firm foundation for a future life of quiet desperation and self-loathing.
For the unindoctrinated, "Foobs" are the characters in For Better or For Worse.

Shaenon Garrity wrote the definitive case against Anthony a couple months ago.

UPDATE: The Curmudgeon comments on today's strip, too. Iz hilarious.

I might enjoy that website more if up to 3/4ths of the posters didn't sound like they were on the lam from National Lampoon's letters page. :/

Also, I'd completely forgotten that FOOB was still running. It's been a snore for eons now. Maybe Johnston is secretly relieved that everybody apparently hates Anthony because hate keeps them reading.

I think you're on to something there: Schadenfreude is the only redeeming value I can see in following the strip at this point. How low will Lizzie go to keep the dweeb she spurned after high school? "Hey, gurrrrls, I nabbed me a manager of an auto shop owned by my brother's high school buddy. We're gonna shack up in my brother's basement, what used to be my parent's house. We're saving for a trailer. I bet you're GREEN with envy."

And, yeah, I tend to stick with Josh and ignore the rest, although a few comments can be amusing.

Now I can't get this scenario out of my head where the Cat & Girl characters kidnap Lizzie from the strip and cart her off to a deprogrammer.

It's kind of sad that Marvel and DC have the market cornered on cross-over comics because that would be just fantabulous, no ?

Cat Girl

That would be pretty funny. I'd be interested to see what Zippy-esque techniques Cat would employ.

But Lynn wouldn't tolerate it, I think.

Not too surprised, really. Lynn Johnston is going through a painful divorce, so I pretty much expected this to happen.

But yeah, I stopped reading the Foobs long time ago. Thankfully, Atlanta Journal-Constitution has LOTS (and I mean that in capital letters) of comics for you to choose from.
