Isn't "Berkeley Activist" a Redundant Phrase?

March 23rd, 2005 (09:22 pm)

I post this link mostly for [info]arasay, but other liberry and civil liberties folks might find it interesting. The Berkeley Daily Planet reports that a new member to the Berkely Public Library Board of Trusties is an old activist. Ying Lee plans to oppose library worker lay offs and the implementation of tracking devices on materials checked out by patrons. Go, Grandma!

Give Paul a Chance

March 23rd, 2005 (09:55 pm)

The Miami Herald asked four "experts" to assess the leadership strengths Paul Wolfowitz can bring to the World Bank. Here's my favorite:

Answer from Roberto Teixeira da Costa, board member of Banco Itau in Brazil: I have heard several times that James Wolfensohn had too many difficulties in imposing on the machine of the Bank what he thought should be done. In that sense, a good strategist upon his arrival at the Bank should be welcomed and given the chance to streamline the organization. Also, Mr. Wolfowitz . . . will be faced with the great challenge of poverty in developing countries. . . . That is why I believe that Mr. Wolfowitz deserves the benefit of the doubt. Let's not criticize him before seeing what the man will do in the job.
Yes, you read that right: "good strategist." Sure, if FUBAR can be considered a "strategy."
