Human Rights Watch calls for an independent investigation into the abuse of Abu Ghraib prisoners by US soldiers and military intelligence:
If there is no real accountability for the widespread abuses against detainees, all the protestations of disgust and condemnation by President Bush and others will be meaningless. For the next decade, the perpetrators of atrocities around the world will point to Abu Ghraib as a justification or an excuse.
HRW notes that Pentagon officials investigating the abuses report they are under pressure not to implicate the top brass or other high-ranking officers. If we want to make any real claim to higher ideals about human rights or democratic accountability, we should pressure our congresshmucks to heed HRW's advice.
Just sayin.
