Go Howard and Eddie!

August 4th, 2004 (11:59 am)

Underground cartoonist legend and Stuck Rubber Baby graphic novelist Howard Cruse has gone all respectable on us: he and longtime partner Eddie Sedarbaum got legally married in Massachusetts. As the link will tell you, they also bought a swell new home. Go check it out, weep at the touching photos and send 'em a congrats!

Human Rights Watch calls for an independent investigation into the abuse of Abu Ghraib prisoners by US soldiers and military intelligence:

If there is no real accountability for the widespread abuses against detainees, all the protestations of disgust and condemnation by President Bush and others will be meaningless. For the next decade, the perpetrators of atrocities around the world will point to Abu Ghraib as a justification or an excuse.
HRW notes that Pentagon officials investigating the abuses report they are under pressure not to implicate the top brass or other high-ranking officers. If we want to make any real claim to higher ideals about human rights or democratic accountability, we should pressure our congresshmucks to heed HRW's advice.

Just sayin.

Henry Cartier-Bresson took beautiful portraits of celebrities, revolutionaries, intellectuals, artists, activists and politicians, but I like his on-the-spot photos of ordinary people doing ordinary—and sometimes not so ordinary—things the best. That kid is king.

RIP.
