Hee hee hee

July 6th, 2004 (08:41 am)

I thought it was a prop Will Farrell hastily devised for his Anchorman appearance on the Today Show, but no, it was real: NY Post names the wrong guy for Kerry Veep pick.

Dewey defeats ... Gephardt?

The New York Post, in a front page gaffe reminiscent of the 1948 headline wrongly announcing President Truman's defeat, proclaimed Tuesday that Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry would select Dick Gephardt as his running mate.

While the ink was still drying on the Post's late edition, Kerry announced his choice: John Edwards.

"KERRY'S CHOICE," read the headline over the page one "exclusive" story. "Dem picks Gephardt as VP candidate." The story, which ran without a byline, was accompanied by a file photo of the Missouri congressman and the Massachusetts senator.

The Post said it was preparing a statement on the matter.
Hopefully accompanied by much aheming, coughing and loosening of collar.

Johnny Hart: Still the Most Interesting Cartoonist in the Funny Papers.

Exhibit A, which reads better than he intended.

Exhibit B, wherein the stone age premise of his strip is suddenly recontextualized. (Found via indymag.

And no, I have no idea what he's really getting at. Still, it's pretty funny, intentionally or not.

F911: Lefty Not Impressed

July 6th, 2004 (12:12 pm)

What the hell: I'll keep flogging this horse. More lefty criticism of Fahrenheit 911, this time from Robert Jensen at ZNet, a much better written and thought out piece than the Chuck Richardson piece I mentioned yesterday. Like others, Jensen takes issue with Moore's incoherence and ham-handedness; uniquely, Jensen feels that despite Moore's praiseworthy treatment of racism during the 2000 election and in military recruitment practices, Moore himself unconsciously deals in racist imagery:What? Not the 'race card'! Well, read on )

D'YA MIND? I'M READIN' HERE!

July 6th, 2004 (09:38 pm)

Y'ever sit on the bus, a book in your hand, and some guy looks over your shoulder at what you're reading? Ru-u-ude! Even worse when the government does it. Thanks to the USAPATRIOT Act, the FBI can go to the library, shake down your poor librarian and find out what books you checked out, too. I'm not sure what investigators could hope to glean from such information. When terrorists take a break from the monkeys bars and tire rings they run through in those training videos, perhaps they like to curl up with a spot of tea and some Jane Austen? Meanwhile the amateur scientist curious about the workings of chemical weapons or an atomic bomb gets the lone light bulb and electrified nipple clamp treatment. He just wants that MIT scholarship—give 'em a break!

It won't go that far (knock on wood), but so what? Go to this ACLU site, read up and use their resources to tell your congresshmuck to support Rep. Barry Sander's "Freedom to Read" Ammendment.
