Praise (and some quibbles) for Dicebox

current mood: Eyes rolling

Comixpedia takes another gander at Jenn Manley Lee's Dicebox, the story of two women hoboing about the universe. Or, here's how the reviewer describes it:

The science fiction of Jenn Manley Lee's Dicebox is more akin to the soft/feminist science fiction of Ursula K. Le Guin and Octavia Butler. According to the author's notes, Dicebox is the story of an eventful year in the lives of two middle age women, itinerant workers who are traveling across the galaxy. With an internet full of science fiction webcomics inspired by anime or 1950s pulp, Dicebox promises an interesting change of pace.
Sounds about right. The reviewer goes on to briefly discuss Jenn's treatment of gender and gender roles, comments that the gender ambiguity of some characters can be distracting (hmmm, maybe cuz yer s'posezta think about it? Cf. Brecht), and critiques Jenn's dialogue-driven/lo-action narrative technique. I won't quibble with the latter, not because I agree with it, but because, regardless of the argument's merits (for which there are some), it sometimes comes down to reader preference, yes? You either like the dialogue and prefer to fill in the blanks regarding the action, or you don't and want a little more whiz-bang. I find it refreshing that an sf comics story dispenses with technophilic fetishism and pages of pew-pew-pew ka-BOOOM! That said, it's an overall positive and encouraging review. I'll leave the more persnickety objections to her husband.

Oh, Please.

We don't need any more action in our comics. Jeez, doesn't this critic guy know that there's a war and stuff ? Let him go get his action freak on there. We have FOX for people like him.

Of course, I don't read that filth myself any more after the whole bosom display business. [harumph] Whatever happened to the good old days where comics featured nothing but cute, family-safe duckies and bunnies ? [cough] And piggies ?[cough cough nudge nudge] --alsis38
